Unlike all of the computer-graded question types available in the D2L quizzes tool, Written Response questions allow students to type written answers, but require the instructor to read and grade the responses by hand.
After a quiz has been taken, the score reported to the student and sent to the Grades tool will reflect only the score generated by the machine-graded questions (for this reason, some faculty choose not to enable the option “allow attempt to be graded immediately upon completion” so that scores aren’t shown; at the very least, remind your students that their quiz scores are not final).
Here is the most efficient way to grade Written Response questions after a quiz has been run:
- Go to your Quizzes list, find the quiz to be graded. Click the menu next to its name, then click Grade
- In the next screen, click the Questions tab.
- Check the box labeled Blind marking, then click on the title of your question
- In the next screen, you will be presented with the answer given by the first student. Type a score in the score box, then type written feedback. Then, click Save and Continue to move on to the next student.
When you click Save and Continue, the student’s score on the quiz will be updated in the Grades tool. After you’ve hit the last student, click Go Back to Questions to return to the list of quiz questions and then repeat the process for any remaining Written Response questions.
NOTE: For students to view written feedback on written response questions, you must have the Post-Test Feedback setting “Show Questions” turned on.
